The UK government has launched a new £1 million Active Travel Innovation Fund, inviting small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and NGOs to submit bold ideas that encourage more people to walk, wheel, and cycle. Managed by Active Travel England (ATE), the fund offers grants of up to £100,000 for innovative projects that can make sustainable travel safer, more accessible, and more appealing across the country.
This initiative isn’t just about health or environmental outcomes – it’s a significant business opportunity. With the application window open until 14 November, SMEs working in sectors such as technology, infrastructure, community engagement, health, and mobility have a chance to secure funding that can help them develop new products, scale proven initiatives, or collaborate with local councils to deliver measurable social impact.
A Boost for Innovation and Growth
As part of the government’s wider Plan for Change, the fund aims to stimulate economic growth while improving public health and reducing congestion. For businesses, this means access to financial support, national visibility, and the chance to work alongside ATE and the Government Grant Managed Service (GGMS) for practical guidance and exposure.
Successful applicants will run their projects over 12 months, after which they’ll provide a final report and case study. These outcomes could serve as a launchpad for further scaling or partnership opportunities, as the most impactful solutions may be replicated elsewhere in the UK.
Opportunities for SMEs
This fund represents a valuable opening for SMEs developing technologies or services that promote active travel—from digital safety tools and journey-planning apps to equipment innovation or inclusive travel design. Businesses in data analytics, AI, app development, or sustainable product design could find this particularly relevant, as could consultancies specialising in urban design, transport planning, or behavioural change.
Wider Economic and Social Benefits
The benefits extend beyond business innovation. Active travel projects can reduce sick days, improve workforce wellbeing, and strengthen local economies—benefits that directly feed back into business productivity. According to government data, similar initiatives are already helping cut an estimated 43,000 sick days per year, easing pressure on the NHS and contributing to healthier, more active communities.
How to Apply
Applications are open until 14 November 2025 via the Government’s Find a Grant platform. ATE encourages applicants with creative, practical, and inclusive ideas—especially those that can be tested, evaluated, and scaled across different regions.
For SMEs, this fund represents not only a potential cash injection but also an opportunity to lead the movement toward a healthier, more sustainable, and economically vibrant Britain.
