Introduction

According to the Barclays Business Prosperity Index for the second quarter of 2025, 53% of SMEs surveyed intend to increase their investment spend over the next 12 months. In terms of investment area focus, 35% of businesses surveyed are looking to invest in new capital equipment to upgrade their operations, which is a comparable level to other core business areas, such as facility upgrades and expansions (37%), developing new products and services (36%) and training and upskilling of staff (34%).

However, the one area of investment that is outpacing other areas significantly is the 68% of businesses who state they plan to increase AI investment levels over the next 12 months. Over the past year small businesses have invested on average £125,250 on AI and emerging technologies, this number increases to £225,500 for medium sized businesses.

Businesses looking to invest in traditional capital equipment and ICT and technological items, including to support AI expansion can access funding in the form of grants from a number of providers in their local area including local authorities and enterprise support agencies.
