Introduction

According to a report on the latest trends from The Start-Up Loans Company, a subsidiary of the British Business Bank, it is estimated that by the end of 2025 the number of new businesses in the UK will increase by 342,000 when compared with 2023. This suggests that previous tough economic conditions caused by inflation and other international factors are now easing to a point where more entrepreneurs feel encouraged to start a new business in the UK.

The report identifies the top business trends in 2025 that start-ups can use to help prepare themselves for setting up a business that has a stronger chance of succeeding.

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) – It is estimated that at least 1 in 6 small businesses are now using AI tools in order to automate and enhance their business activities, including using chatbots to interact with customers and using popular AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini to help write reports, generate content, such as images and videos, get help with coding and carry out in depth research analysis.
  1. Sustainability – A report from Deloitte has revealed that 40% of consumers select items from brands that have highlighted their environmentally sustainable practices and values. Start-ups can set-up with an environmentally sustainable set of goals in mind as a strong sustainability message can attract new customers, increase lead generation and sales and establish brand trust.
  1. Soft Skills Upskilling – According to research from LinkedIn on the most in demand skills at the end of 2024, soft skills that are a key asset to anyone thinking of starting a business, such as communication, customer service and management are currently in short supply. Entrepreneurs are advised to gain access to business coaching or training courses to help develop these skills in order to ensure the greatest chance of success when setting up their business.
  1. Alternative Financing – Start-ups are advised to consider alternative sources of finance to a traditional loan from a high street bank or other conventional credit provider to help pay for their set-up costs. Entrepreneurs can access funding from an online lender, a crowdfunding site or specialist lending platforms, which include the Start Up Loans company, which provides access to a series of accredited lenders who have Government backed loans aimed at releasing credit to start-ups with a strong business plan that may not have been approved a loan elsewhere.

As well as following these above trends, start-ups can also consider getting a head start with their funding costs by applying for Government backed grants, such as funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Businesses can apply for start-up support grants from their local authorities who are responsible for setting up funding pots that support start-up activities within their local area.
