£150M Capital Grants Reopen: A Green Light for English Farmers

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has officially reopened its crucial Capital Grants scheme, injecting a significant £150 million into the agricultural sector. This welcome development follows an unexpected closure last November and forms a key part of the government’s broader £11.8 billion commitment to fostering sustainable farming practices during this parliamentary term. The funding is designed to empower farmers to undertake a wide array of on-farm projects, all aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and bolstering business resilience.

The revitalised scheme offers support for 78 specified items, covering vital areas such as tree planting, robust flood prevention measures, improved slurry storage, and advanced water filtration systems. Defra has also expanded the list to include four new categories: assessing woodland condition, developing wildfire management plans, repairing traditional drystone walls, and hosting educational visits. These additions highlight a commitment to diverse environmental improvements and community engagement, providing farmers with more avenues to invest in the long-term health of their land and local ecosystems.

To ensure the funding reaches as many eligible farms as possible, Defra has introduced specific funding limits for four of the six capital item groups. For projects related to water quality, air quality, and natural flood management, a maximum of £25,000 per farm applies. Meanwhile, schemes focused on boundaries, trees, and orchards can receive up to £35,000. These caps aim to distribute the funds more equitably and manage the overall budget effectively. Farmers who previously submitted applications before the scheme’s temporary closure will have them processed, and new applications are now being accepted, though the scheme will close once all available funding is committed.
