Polaron, a British startup spun out from Imperial College London, has secured the prestigious £1 million Manchester Prize for its ground-breaking AI technology that transforms materials development. The company’s innovative approach reduces development time from years to mere days by using microstructural images to rapidly analyse and predict material performance, creating a significant competitive advantage for manufacturers across industries.

The technology has particular applications in clean energy and transport sectors, enabling the creation of stronger, lighter and more efficient materials for wind turbines and electric vehicle batteries. This acceleration of materials development aligns with the UK government’s Plan for Change, which aims to stimulate economic growth and achieve net zero targets through British innovation.

The Manchester Prize, launched by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology and delivered in partnership with Challenge Works, rewards AI solutions addressing major societal challenges. Polaron’s victory highlights the UK’s commitment to positioning itself as a global leader in AI innovation, with government forecasts suggesting AI could contribute £400 billion to the economy over the next five years. Secretary of State Peter Kyle emphasized that supporting trailblazing companies like Polaron is essential to achieving this vision.
