Business funding from public organisations typically comes in the form of grants and means an opportunity for finance for your business operations that is not repayable, like conventional loans. Most grants come with an application deadline that a business must meet in order to be considered for funding. This deadline means providers can then focus on selecting the top potential candidate businesses to be awarded a grant, based on their selection criteria. This blog provides examples of upcoming deadlines for the beginning of May 2024.

1) Working Capital

Working capital funding covers day to day funding needs of a business to keep it running as a going concern, including purchasing sufficient inventory, bridging delayed payments and covering unexpected expenses. Here’s some examples of upcoming deadlines for the beginning of May.

i) Coetiroedd Bach (Tiny Forests) – Multiple Sites – Round 3 by the Welsh Government: This initiative offers grants to create “Tiny Forests” – fast-growing, native woodlands in urban areas in Wales, to help landowners and businesses improve environmental impact. Maximum funding available is £250,000. Application deadline: 8th May 2024.

ii)Town Centre Activities and Events Grant by Flintshire County Council: This scheme provides grants to support activities and events that promote the vitality and economic viability of town centres in the Flintshire region and can be applied for by local businesses. Maximum funding available is £10,000. Application deadline: 6th May 2024.

2) Recruit and Develop Staff

Recruit and develop staff funding covers safeguarding existing jobs, creating new jobs and setting up training and skill development activities. Here’s an example of a deadline for the beginning of May.

i) Help to Grow: Management by Cardiff Metropolitan University: This programme provides university-led funded 12 weeks of coaching and mentoring to help business leaders develop their strategic and business planning skills. Maximum funding available is 90% of the course fees. Application deadline: 8th May 2024.

3) Business Innovation

Business innovation funding covers research and development project activities across various science, industry and creative sectors, here’s some examples of upcoming deadlines for the beginning of May.

i) Eureka Quantum Collaborative R&D Multilateral 2024 by Innovate UK: This programme supports UK businesses involved in collaborative research and development projects addressing global challenges relating to quantum technologies. Maximum funding available is £500,000. Application deadline: 8th May 2024.

ii) Diet and Health Innovation: Early Stage Feasibility Projects by Innovate UK: This programme offers grants to support the development of innovative solutions that address diet-related health challenges with businesses working in collaboration with Diet and Health Open Innovation Research Club (OIRC) hubs. Maximum funding available is £175,000. Application deadline: 8th May 2024.

iii) BFI Development Funding by British Film Institute: This scheme provides funding for the formal development of original live action and animation feature filmmaking from treatments to production-ready screenplays. Application deadline: 7th May 2024.

4) Business Growth

Business growth funding covers the cost of business development activities such as launching new products or services, marketing costs and growth planning. Here’s some examples of upcoming deadlines for the beginning of May. 

i) Innovation and Resilience Fund – Round 3 – Farm Diversification Pathway by East Devon District Council: This scheme is providing capital funding to support the delivery of projects that will allow a farm business to diversify by developing a new product, service or technology not related to agriculture. Maximum funding available is £30,000. Application deadline: 8th May 2024.

ii) MSDUK Innovation Challenge 2024 by MSDUK: This programme offers grants to manufacturing and engineering businesses in the UK to help them develop and commercialise innovative products, processes, or services. Maximum funding available is £20,000. Application deadline: 7th May 2024.
