Innovate UK Grants: AI Reshapes Applications

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Innovate UK is undergoing a significant transformation in its approach to funding, directly impacting UK SMEs seeking innovation grants. From January 2025, the popular Smart Grants programme has been paused to allow for the development of more tailored support mechanisms. A new pilot programme is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025, specifically designed to assist startups in addressing challenges related to innovation, sustainability, and scaling. This signals a shift towards more targeted funding opportunities, moving away from the broad scope of the previous Smart Grants which covered all industry and technology areas.

A key driver behind these changes is the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT. Tom Adeyoola, Innovate UK’s executive chair, has initiated a complete overhaul of the grant application process, rebuilding it “from the ground up”. This fundamental redesign is a direct response to how AI is changing the landscape of grant writing, with Adeyoola noting that such tools allow for “free grant writing”. While Innovate UK had already reduced the time from application to funding, this new overhaul aims to make the process even more efficient and responsive to technological advancements.

For UK SMEs, these changes mean that applying for Innovate UK grants will be different. Businesses should get ready for a new way of applying, which might involve using AI-powered systems or more advanced online forms. This shift will likely benefit SMEs that are not only creative in their business ideas but also good at using technology in their applications. While the break in Smart Grants might leave a temporary gap, the upcoming trial program and the wider changes driven by AI suggest that future funding will be simpler, faster, and more focused on cutting-edge ideas.
