Introduction
According to renovation experts, the average cost of commercial property refurbishment can vary greatly with prices ranging from £19 to £180 per square foot, depending on how complex the job is. It is the case that with high end complex refurbishments, costs can go even higher than this figure.
A number of grants are available to businesses who renovate an existing business space or acquire, convert and move into a new premises. Changes can include interior design and layout, exterior building renovations, health and safety compliance updates, sustainability and efficiency improvements, space optimisation, furniture, fixture and fittings updates and restoration of historic buildings.
Given that building renovation activity is likely to cost several thousand pounds on average for a small business and running far higher for businesses with larger premises, a number of grants are available to help with certain types of renovation activities.
Local authorities in particular are interested in providing part funding grants for improvements for commercial businesses located in town centres, such as retail or hospitality, to improve their shop fronts, update and move into a previously empty space or renovate the interior fixtures and fittings of an existing premises.
Buildings located in conservation zones that are considered historic either in town centres or within rural areas can also receive funding to restore listed buildings or features to help preserve cultural heritage.
What Are Some Of the Latest UK Buildings and Renovation Grants Available?
i) SPF Town Centre Shop Front Grant
Caerphilly County Borough Council is providing financial assistance to new and existing High Street enterprises to replace or refurbish existing shop fronts with a view to helping them relaunch, develop, decarbonise and grow. Funding up to £10,000 is available.

ii) Shopfront Improvement Scheme
Falmouth Business Improvement District has made available a scheme where local businesses can apply for funding towards the cost of works to visually improve external shop frontages. Funding up to £1,000 is available.

iii) Paddington and Bayswater Shopfront Improvement Scheme
City of Westminster Council is running a scheme where businesses and property owners in the Paddington and Bayswater areas can apply for funding to support the cost of works to improve their shopfronts, with a view to attracting more customers, improving the customer experience and creating a more welcoming and vibrant high street environment. Funding up to £20,000 is available.

iv) Historic Building Grants – Local Heritage Assets
Leicester City Council is running a scheme that is providing grants for the owners of historic and listed buildings in Leicester’s conservation areas to repair and restore their buildings.

v) City Centre Improvement Grant Fund
Glasgow City Council is providing a scheme that aims to support businesses, organisations and communities in Glasgow city centre to create “meanwhile use spaces” from empty commercial properties, such as pop-up locations, deliver small projects and undertake minor improvement works. Funding up to £20,000 is available.

vi) Newhaven Business Grants Programme
East Sussex County Council is running a scheme that is providing funding to businesses in the Newhaven Town Deal area to support capital projects, which can include new equipment, machinery, commercial vehicles, and property adaptations. Funding up to £15,000 is available.

vii) Rural Swale Small Business Grant Scheme
Swale Borough Council is providing funding to support small rural businesses to make small capital investments to support growth and carbon reduction measures and to support capital projects which help develop the local visitor economy, including improvements to premises. Funding up to £7,000 is available.

viii) Shropshire Hills National Landscape Conservation Fund
Shropshire Hills National Landscape is providing a scheme that will fund projects that deliver practical conservation in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. This includes funding for improvements and repairs to premises and physical structures and features. Funding up to £2,000 is available.
