The UK farming landscape is changing fast, and staying ahead of the curve means embracing innovation. That’s why the latest news from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Innovate UK is so significant for farmers and growers. A new £12.6 million in grant funding has been announced, specifically designed to turn your smart ideas into real-world solutions that can cut costs, improve efficiency, and future-proof your business.
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all fund. It’s been split into two distinct competitions to support innovation at different stages of its journey. Think of it as a “Dragons’ Den” for farming, where projects are supported from their earliest concept to market readiness.
The first competition is for Feasibility Studies, which has a £4.8 million pot. This is for early-stage ideas that need testing to see if they’re viable in the real world. If you’ve got a concept that could revolutionize a process on your farm, but you need to prove it works before investing further, this is your entry point. Projects can receive between £200,000 and £500,000 to help you develop your idea. The competition opens on October 13, 2025.
For more developed projects, there’s the Small R&D Partnerships competition, with a substantial £7.8 million available. This is for businesses that have already proven an idea works and are now ready to develop a new farming product or service to bring it closer to market. This funding, ranging from £1 million to £3 million, is a powerful tool for scaling up an innovation and moving toward commercial use. This competition opens very soon on September 15, 2025.
What’s especially powerful about these grants is the focus on collaboration. The programmes are designed to encourage partnerships between farmers, growers, foresters, and research groups. This collaborative approach not only strengthens your application but also brings in new expertise to help your project succeed. To help you find partners, consortia-building events will be held on September 18 and October 14.
These grants are a direct investment in the future of UK agriculture, supporting the industry to become more resilient and profitable. Whether your idea is a new way to reduce seasonal labour, improve animal health, or increase sustainability, this funding could be the catalyst you need. The government has made it clear it wants to invest in solutions driven by the industry itself, so if you have a great idea, now is the time to make it happen.
