During recent discussions with the grants community it has become apparent that there are specific sectors and industries that align well with grants. If you take an example such as artificial intelligence, grant funding could be used in many different ways some of which may be less obvious than you might think. The obvious application for grant funding is in the development of new AI applications. However there are also associated areas that could attract funding – an example of this would be training and consultancy on how to apply AI effectively in a business. There are currently 11 grant schemes that are specific to AI related training and consultancy. They include free AI training courses, vouchers to pay for expert advice, student placements (to work on AI projects) and access to digital coaches. Most of the grants pay the training provider or expert directly.
A couple of examples, one here from Solent and another from BSi. They show the range of grants available both at a regional and national level. There are also grants available for specific sectors as well such as construction, creative industries, transport and agriculture. Quite often the major barrier to the adoption of new technology and therefore increased productivity is not the technology itself but in getting it adopted. That is where consultancy and training services can really be beneficial and grant funding can be a great way of funding this.
